Cliffs has been actively supporting educational institutions in communities where it operates for more than a century. Through partnerships with school districts in Minnesota and Michigan, we present annual awards for student and teacher excellence. The company’s managed mines also support local school districts with grant programs, teacher workshops, and internships that are handled through the partnerships.
Corporate support through the Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation and its mines has helped to fund such building and development projects as the Iron Ore Heritage Ore Trails in Negaunee, Ishpeming and Republic Township; the Iron Industry Museum in Michigan; a laboratory in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Michigan Technological University; the American Steel collection in the Western Reserve Historical Society; Historical Societies in Finland and Schroeder, Minnesota; as well as equipment for the power systems laboratory at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
Our Asia-Pacific business unit plays an active and ongoing role in assisting various charities and contributing to community life through a range of sponsorship programs which have benefited individuals and community based groups from all walks of life. Sponsorships have included local service clubs in Esperance, Parkerville Children’s Home, The Royal Flying Doctor Service, Kalgoorlie Mining Hall of Fame, Lifeline, Bay of Isles Aboriginal Community Inc and St Vincent de Paul (Vincentcare) to name just a few.
We are cognisant of the changing landscape in Austalia in relation to land access and recognises values attached to lands by Indigenous Peoples in the form of Native Title and Aboriginal Heritage and Culture. Activities undertaken by Australian Iron Ore within its operational areas are conducted with full regard to the legislative requirements for ensuring that heritage areas are respected and that due process is followed in completing Native Title formalities.
